The Lords of Savernake

This book tells the  history of Savernake Forest, the only  royal forest created by William the Conqueror, and the Esturmy family to whom William  granted it. It is also the story of Tottenham House which stands in the forest and was first recorded as a dwelling place of the Esturmys in the eleventh century and where they continued to live until the beginning of World War II. It has had many iterations and became one of the grandest country houses in England in the nineteenth century. It was sold in 2014 and is currently undergoing significant restoration which will result in it becoming one of the most magnificent houses in the British Isles.

This is Charles Nettlefold's fourth book, the others being The Lords of Yester, a history of a famous Scottish family and their beautiful  Adam house;  The Chamberlain Legacy,  a family history of Joe, Neville and Austen Chamberlain and a biography of William Lowndes, the longest seving Secretary of the Treasury. Charles is married and lives in Wiltshire and went to Hawtreys School when it was at Tottenham House.
